The latest distribution, bioperl-1.5.1, should still be considered a work in progress. We use the package for real work at our sites, but if you are considering using bioperl in production work, we would recommend both heavily testing the package on your site and posting a mail to discussion list to hear whether anyone else has had problems with the functionality you want to use.

INSTALLATION

First read the installation instructions for all Unix systems in the INSTALL file or for Windows in the INSTALL.WIN file. You may or may not have to download any files from this site, depending on how you choose to install Bioperl. The PPM (*ppm.tar.gz) and PPD files (Bioperl.ppd for the current release) for Windows installation are found at http://bioperl.org/DIST if you elect to install manually on Windows.

We are interested in hearing about how the installation process works on different platforms and operating systems. General comments, suggestions and installation war stories should be sent to the project mail-list bioperl-l. Installation bug reports should be submitted via our web-based reporting system at http://bugzilla.bioperl.org/. There is also a specific PLATFORMS file describing specific issues or workarounds for different platforms. Please see the Bioperl Documentation page for additional user-contributed documenation on installation.

The distribution comes with its own internal documentation in the perl documentation format (POD). This documentation has been translated into HTML, available below. A good starting point for people learning about bioperl is the bioperl.pod documentation, or the bptutorial, or the HOWTOs.
